Spring Activities for Seniors

Every year, I find myself longing for Spring as my family and I try to fight off “cabin fever”. However, it’s clear that the winter months are finally coming to an end. Temperatures are rising and the days are getting longer. As a mother and caregiver, I love Spring because both my young children and senior parents can take part in outdoor activities, sometimes even together. Here is a list of some of my favorite Spring pastimes that are suitable for any age group.

1. Get outside

With warmer temperatures, there’s no excuse to stay inside! Spend some time in nature and soak up the Spring sunshine. Take a walk on your local trails or sit outside with your favorite book. For seniors who aren’t as mobile, try setting up a bird feeder near a window so they can bird-watch. Sitting outside is also a great way to take advantage of Spring weather. For even more outdoor fun, channel your inner child and blow some bubbles as you and your senior enjoy the scenery. In the evening, you can also catch fireflies in the backyard.

2. Spring cleaning

It’s no doubt that we all have too much clutter and need to organize our space. Spring is the perfect excuse to find the time to clean out the attic or wash the windows. Open a window to let some fresh air in and get to work. Even if the grandkids aren’t too excited about chores, this is an activity that the whole family can participate in.

3. Play a game

From hopscotch to hula-hooping, get active outside. Exercise is essential to maintaining physical wellbeing and games are an easy way to do that. Younger children and seniors can engage in a friendly game of four-square or cornhole. If it’s a windy day, try flying kites. Scavenger hunts and card games are also great for the whole family.

4. Green thumb

When the leaves on the trees begin to reappear and the flowers start to blossom, it’s a giveaway that Spring is in full effect. Help out mother nature by planting flowers of your own to add some color to your patio. You can also plant a tree or maybe start your own garden with fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Seniors and kids alike will find joy in watching your plants grow.

Finding activities that are appropriate for both seniors and children can be tricky sometimes.

Finding activities that are appropriate for both seniors and children can be tricky sometimes. I hope you are able to incorporate some of these ideas at your next family gathering. And always remember to stop, smell the roses, and catch a breath of the Spring air.
